GAUTENG RUNNING A CLEAN GOVERNMENT [STATEMENT]

For immediate release

Wednesday, 23 August 2017

The audit outcomes released by the office of the Auditor General on the Gauteng Provincial Government Departments and entities for the 2016/2017 financial year paints a reassuring picture of a province that is on an upward trajectory.

The ANC Gauteng Province welcomes the audit outcomes. The report has once again validated the feedback the ANC-led government gave to the people of Gauteng Province in May during the release of the provincial government’s Midterm Review Report. The review reflected in great detail, progress made over the first two and half years of the fifth administration and the challenges being faced in delivering on the commitment to transform; modernise and re-industrialise the Gauteng City Region.

We welcome the fact that the number of clean audits has grown from 56% three years ago to 65% in the 2016/2017 financial year and that all Gauteng Departments have achieved unqualified audits.

It remains without doubt that the effective deployment of the state and the rapid pursuit of radical social and economic transformation is a critical factor if we are to realise our historic mission of ridding our society of the albatross of apartheid colonial past and realise the national democratic society.

Thus, stable administration, good governance and sound financial management are the bedrock of an effective state.

In this regards, the ANC commends the Gauteng Provincial Government led by Comrade David Makhura as the Premier together with his executive on their sustained commitment to good governance and the eradication of fruitless, wasteful and irregular expenditure. The mammoth task, of addressing joblessness, eradicating crime, reducing poverty levels, amongst other priorities, that continues to confront this administration requires that the ANC-led government must be unforgiving in dealing with maladministration and corruption.

The ANC Gauteng Province calls on the ANC-led provincial government to redouble efforts to ensure that the goal of achieving 100% clean audits across provincial departments and entities is realised as this will have a positive impact on the lives of the citizens of our province.
