ANC GAUTENG PROVINCE WELCOMES COMMENCEMENT OF LIFE ESIDIMENI ARBITRATION PROCESS

The ANC Gauteng Province welcomes the commencement of the alternative dispute resolution process (ADR) led by the former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke in the Life Esidimeni project.

Our thoughts of empathy are with the families and relatives of the deceased patients and surviving patients as they go through the mediation process in the next three weeks. We continue to convey our sincerest condolences to the families of the 118 mental health care users who passed on as revealed today by the Health Ombudsman.

It is our hope that the unfolding ADR process will in some way ensure that the families of the affected patients find healing, closure and some kind of redress following the tragic incidents surrounding the deaths of mentally ill patients.

The acceptance of the state’s liability for the tragic incident and the suffering and trauma caused, together with the strides made in implementing the Health Ombudsman’s recommendations have so far given us an assurance that the ANC-led Provincial Government in Gauteng working with the Health Department nationally remain committed to not see such a tragedy again in our province.
